![]() some things in this world must be protected, even if it means getting your hands dirty. some things can only be seen with a tainted eye. PERSONALITYTL;DR VERSION: "He's always serious when playing around and always plays around when he's serious." A rude little sadist with an careless attitude. However, deep down, he does care about protecting the innocent. Very deep down. ‣ A sadistic little shit: Adapting the historical figure of Okita Souji in fiction involves balancing two sides: a cheerful young man who often plays with the neighborhood kids, and one of the most efficient killers of the Shinsengumi. So Sorachi makes Okita Sougo a sadist. In the show, being a sadist is his gimmick. Most of the time he acts in a way to get a reaction out of others, even better if they're in excruciating pain. This can range from making crude remarks to get a reaction to blowing up people with a bazooka. Some further examples from canon: putting a girl on a leash and getting her to be into his petplay within minutes of meeting her, eating a sausage in front of hungry animals and then taking a picture on his phone of their disappointed faces, installing a tanning bed in Kagura's coffin because he was aware she was faking her death, shooting at Matsudaira and attempting to frame Hijikata for it, handcuffing Hijikata and Gintoki together because he knows they'd have a Bad Time, etc.... His sadism is part of why he is why he's so good at the "killing people" part of his job. But he also won't hesitate to tease and torment his colleagues and friends. The main target for this is a certain Vice-Chief: Sougo frequently makes attempts to kill his superior, Hijikata Toushirou. These sadistic proclivities of his has sparked rivalries (like in the case of Kagura, Nobume, and Kamui) and even friendships (like how he and Sakata Gintoki form the "sadist combo"). Basically, he's playful and mischievous...but taken to the nth degree. He likes playing pranks on people and it is where the childish part of his personality comes out. He's also immature in how competitive he can be. His rivalry with Kagura is a part of this; they'll always bicker and physically fight whenever they meet. You won't even be immune to his whims if you're a kid. Kagura is 14 while he is 18, and he still enjoys picking fights with her. Additionally, he was willing to play against neighborhood kids (in their beetle fights) and won every time. Granted, it was for a good reason, but...he definitely still enjoyed doing it anyways. ‣ Deadpan & Insolent: This is generally how Sougo comes off to mostly everyone. He is usually blunt and rude, but his way of speaking is deadpan and very casual. Due to this, sometimes one can never tell if he's being sarcastic or not. For example, he says he never washes his hands after going to the bathroom, but does he mean it or is it saying it to freak out Hijikata? We (as well as Hijikata) may never know... Most of the time, he has a nonchalant and devil-may-care attitude. His attitude can even border on laziness, as seen through the many times he naps on the job (which is clear if he is wearing his signature red sleeping mask). He generally has no respect for authority figures and even the one leader he respects, Kondou, can be subject to his sadistic whims. But in urgent situations, he can still remain calm and collected--still impressive for one so young, but understandable as someone who lives by the sword. ‣ Loyal...to certain people: Notice how he's insolent to mostly everyone? The exceptions to this are his older sister, Okita Mitsuba, and his commander/surrogate big brother, Kondou Isao. Okita's parents died when he was very young, so Mitsuba raised him like her own son. Sougo acts incredibly different when around Mitsuba; he is openly affectionate, warm, and obedient. Talk about gap moe. He tries his best to be a good man she could be proud of, even if that means he has to stretch the truth a little bit. Unfortunately, Mitsuba contracts tuberculosis and dies, and this side of Sougo dies with her. On the other hand, it's easy to see why Sougo teases Kondou a lot. Kondou is a walking reservoir of secondhand embarrassment. However, Kondou is also a charismatic leader who believes the best in others. He was the one who believed in Sougo when Sougo was just a bratty and lonely kid. Kondou reached out to him and invited him to his dojo. Growing up, Sougo got attached and now he will follow Kondou anywhere. It's part of why Sougo is one of the most dangerous members in the Shinsengumi--he takes on being the bad guy, doing the dirty work, in order to protect Kondou's goodness. Part of the reason why he resents Hijikata so much stems from his childhood jealousy over Hijikata getting the attention of his two favorite people. When Hijikata does end up proving his loyalty to Sougo, Sougo reluctantly does accept him as a friend even if Sougo will never admit it out loud. While it is hard to form positive bonds with Sougo, the ones he does have are very strong. For those people, but especially his beloved sister and his beloved leader, he would do anything. ‣ Can think ahead: He's not a chessmaster, but he's generally can come up with plans and think on his feet. This mostly shows up when he fights in serious arcs: for example, he notices Itou's ambitions to try and assassinate Kondou, so Sougo purposefully gets Hijikata dismissed to get closer to Itou to monitor him. During his fight with Kamui, Sougo knows he's up against an alien with superhuman strength. So he fakes losing an arm in order to catch Kamui off guard. He may have gotten his high rank due to Kondou's favoritism, but his skill and willingness to fight dirty have made him worthy of staying there. It's also worth noting that this strategical thinking combined with his sadism is a dangerous combo. There was one arc where he and Hijikata get stuck in a parody of Saw. They were kidnapped and informed that one of them had to kill the other...or else the Shinsengumi HQ would be blown up. At the end of that arc, it was revealed that Sougo planned the whole thing all along, and the kidnapper was actually a friend of his. Sougo was able to anticipate Hijikata's reactions and was willing to put himself in a horrible situation just to mess with the guy! He's not perfect though. In the Yagyuu arc, he was able to anticipate that his enemy's bokken would get stuck in the low roof of the dojo; he did not anticipate that the roof would be too low for him (as he was riding on Kagura's back). It's Gintama. In most comedic situations, he's dumb as every other character in this goddamn series is dumb. ‣ Insecure???: During one episode, he lets slip that his sadism is a "mask for [his] insecurity." Given that this was when he forgot to put on his seat belt on a roller coaster (yes this actually happened) and thought he was going to die, maybe this is a confession. He had always been a mischievous child, but he was also a friendless loser. Now, he's one of the youngest men in the Shinsengumi and his looks don't help in that department either. He could've played up his sadism as a way to keep the rest of the Shinsengumi and his enemies from underestimating him. He makes it clear how dangerous he is in order to gain respect. Not that he doesn't legitimately enjoy being a sadist, because he does. He just makes sure to stress this part of this identity to perhaps overcompensate for social shortcomings and youth. He's aware that he's a pretty rotten brat, and that separates him from the people he cares about. In one of his lowest points, he says to Kondou, "I'm not as pure as you think I am. I'm not one to trust others. I only think of myself. Even when we were together, I always felt a gap between us. I always felt that I was different from you guys." Clearly, his awareness that of the "gap" between him and his loved ones caused him pain. Given that he was jealous of Hijikata for most of his life, he couldn't help but compare himself to that rotten vice-chief, too--it was another reason, perhaps, that he saw Mitsuba and Kondou flock to Hijikata's side. Luckily, Kondou punches him to get him out of that way of thinking. Sougo generally doesn't care about how he comes across, but in his darkest moments, these kinds of thoughts may come back. ‣ A soft side???: As said before, Sougo knows his role is to play the bad guy to protect Kondou--but he shows that tendency towards others as well, others who are more innocent. One of the best examples of this is the Rokkaku arc. A terrorist organization manipulates a young girl, Kirie, into attempting to assassinate Sougo because he murdered her father. In reality, one of Sougo's subordinates, Kamiyama, killed her father in self-defense during a raid. However, Sougo doesn't let anyone else know the truth, even the rest of the Shinsengumi. Throughout Kirie's interactions with him, Sougo plays up that he is the one who slaughtered her father. When Kagura questions him about this, he replies that some things are worth protecting, even if it means getting your hands dirty. Another example is the Rengokukan arc. He shows the Yorozuya an illegal underground fighting organization, trying to get them to take action against it. Sougo couldn't bust the ring himself because he was aware that the Shinsengumi would face the political consequences. However, after the death of a fighter who wanted to run away to protect his adopted children, Sougo (along with Hijikata) was moved to step in to put a stop to the fighting ring anyways. Even in this arc, very early into the story, we see this side of Sougo. And that is his way of being a samurai. He's barely an adult, whose cute looks seem to be at odds with his dirty hands and dirty mind filled with all sorts of pranks. But when it comes down to it, he will protect what's important to him. A de facto bad guy on the good guys' side. ABILITIES‣ Expert swordsmanship: Sougo is considered one of the best, if not the best, swordsmen in the Shinsengumi. In the Shinsengumi Crisis arc, he was able to face several opponents at once and while alone, and come out victorious. Canonically he has been able to cut down rock, concrete, and an entire car, and in one strike too. Additionally, he's able to deflect bullets with his sword (dual swords, in that instance). To find someone of his skill level--or higher--would be interesting to play out! ‣ Sitcom hardiness: In Gintama, Sougo has gone through a lot for the sake of comedy. One of the examples mentioned before hand was being thrust into the air on a moving roller coaster. He's also been fired at by bazookas while clinging onto a giant demon dog, been thrown into the side of a cliff, and been turned into a screwdriver. That's just how this series is. Obviously he won't be as hardy in rp, but he generally should come out okay in slapstick situations. PRISMATICA INFOMoonblessing: Iris, because he'll hate it. His usual form will be bat wings along with deer ears and antlers so he looks like a little demon. This is will his usual form, however he may get some rabbit traits or turn into an entire goose sometimes. Inventory: ‣ His sword, the Kiku-Ichimonji RX-78 model, that comes with an MP3 player + earphones ‣ 1 bazooka ‣ 2 rockets ‣ Casual clothing (kimono + hakama + haori) ‣ Wallet-sized picture of Mitsuba (Shinsengumi uniform + red sleeping mask is already on his person) Room Info: ‣ Living space is generic, but ‣ Roommates with his Aneue (Mitsuba Okita) and Caesar Zeppeli. Sougo enjoys making Caesar's life a living hell while loving his big sis.
